Events Watch the recording: The genetics of aplastic anaemia: a research update with Professor Alan Warren The Aplastic Anaemia Trust recently funded an exciting collaborative study investigating genetic mutations in patients with aplastic anaemia or PNH. We are delighted that Professor Alan Warren joined us in June 2025 to present a webinar, highlighting the exciting early stage results from the research, Scientists are aware of specific genetic mutations that tend to show up in aplastic anaemia patients, but more research is needed to understand their effects and whether they could help us to better predict a patient’s likely response to treatment, and their risk of developing blood cancer. Professor Alan Warren at Cambridge, Dr Richard Kelly and Dr Darren Newton at Leeds, and Dr Jyoti Nangalia from the Wellcome Sanger Institute have been working in partnership to sequence the genomes of patients with aplastic anaemia. Taking samples from 13 patients, they have been using revolutionary new techniques to look into the behaviour of their stem cell clones. The team have made some fascinating discoveries, and during the webinar Professor Warren shared his findings, and what this could mean for the ways in which we understand aplastic anaemia in the future. You paid for it! The cost of funding this research is £50,641.63. Every penny of this was raised by people who have aplastic anaemia, and their friends and family. If you'd like to fund more research like this that could change the way we understand and treat this condition, an ideal way to do that is to leave a gift in your will.
